What is the Santa Barbara Culinary Experience?

The Santa Barbara Culinary Experience is a world-class three-day event, set in the American Riviera and celebrating a taste of Santa Barbara by bringing together local and national talent in the spirit of Julia Child. Enjoy Santa Barbara (which was Julia’s final home) with its dynamic food and wine scene. Restaurants, bars and hotels across the city and harbor will participate in this inaugural experience offering new twists on classic Julia Child dishes, signature Julia and Paul Child cocktails, educational programming, tours, talks and much more.

The Santa Barbara Culinary Experience takes place March 13-15, 2020, in venues across Santa Barbara County.

What is SBCE doing regarding COVID-19?

The team at Santa Barbara Culinary Experience is committed to providing our attendees, staff, volunteers and partners with a healthy and safe culinary environment across all our events. We have added additional health and cleaning protocols in accord with the best advice of health professionals and community leaders. We look forward to seeing you March 13-15, 2020!

Where do I buy tickets?

Click the Tickets button on this website. We recommend joining our mailing list, and follow us on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter so we can alert you when tickets go on sale.

Are there any free events that do not require tickets?

Yes! Check out the Free Events listing of all events that do not require a ticket to attend.

Can I buy tickets at the event?

Yes, tickets can be purchased online or at the SBCE Concierge. However, many of our events sell out. We recommend purchasing in advance to guarantee availability.

 

The SBCE Concierge is located at 36 State Street on the Court of Califia at The Hotel Californian.

Do I need to print out my tickets?

You will be on the guest list at each event. If you wish to print your ticket and bring with you, you can, but it is not necessary. You can also show our staff your ticket on your mobile device if any issues arise. If you are attending a 21+ event (see your ticket for details), please don’t forget your identification. We want to verify that it’s you.

Are tickets refundable?

No, all ticket sales are final. If you have any questions regarding a refund or your tickets, please contact our ticket provider, NightOut for their policies.

The name on the ticket doesn’t match the attendee’s name. Is that okay?

Yes, all tickets are transferable. As long as the new ticket holder has the mobile ticket or knows the name of the person who purchased the ticket, we can easily check them in.

Yes, we have three days of experiences, lunches, dinners and special events. Find the full schedule of events here.

What types of events will take place at the Santa Barbara Culinary Experience?

The Santa Barbara Culinary Experience will include a wide range of events, including:

 

Cooking Classes – Get up close and personal with local and national chefs to learn their tips, tricks and techniques in the kitchen.


Dynamic Panels – Hear from local and nationally recognized chefs, vintners, ranchers, fishermen, farmers, winemakers and many more. 

 

Feature Films – Watch the critically acclaimed documentary, Nothing Fancy, about cookbook author and Mexican cooking authority Diana Kennedy.

 

Curated Tours – Visit Santa Barbara hot spots and sites that Julia enjoyed, including ranches, wineries, restaurants and other culinary destinations.

 

Family Fun – Bring all ages to explore exciting and interactive activities on everything from nutrition to kitchen science.

 

Themed Events – Visit a wide array of local establishments featuring and hosting Julia Child–themed activities, dishes, drinks and more

Which chefs will be participating in the Santa Barbara Culinary Experience?

Join Vartan Abgaryan, Kiran Bheemarao, Chris Bianco, Johan Denziot, Valerie Gordon, Matt Johnson, Greg Murphy, Jason Paluska, Raj Parr, Michael Patria, Lennon Lee, Brendan Smith, Travis Watson, Sherry Yard, and others for memorable food, and get their insights into cooking techniques, food, wine and drink trends, and much more.

Do you need volunteers?

Yes – this event would not be possible without the help of volunteers. You can sign up to volunteer on our website.

Can children attend?

Check event details for age restrictions. In general, wine receptions, wine, beer and spirits seminars, and winemaker dinners are for attendees 21 years and older. Most cooking classes would be appropriate for mature teens. There are two cooking classes, offered by Apples to Zucchini Cooking School, which are specifically targeted to children 7 to 12 years old. The Sunday Savor Santa Barbara event is open to all ages. Some hotel properties do provide babysitting services if you are traveling with small children.

The Santa Barbara Culinary Experience benefits the The Julia Child Foundation for Gastronomy and Culinary Arts, in addition to promoting and supporting the wider Santa Barbara County culinary, hospitality, tourism and artisan communities. The Santa Barbara Foundation, which is a 501c3, is a fiscal sponsor of the SBCE.

Who were Julia and Paul Child?

Julia Child (1912-2004) was a cookbook author, television hostess and instructor and is widely recognized as a respected teacher and writer, who taught generations of Americans through her classic work, Mastering the Art of French Cooking as well as through her Peabody and Emmy Award winning television series, The French Chef. Mrs. Child was bestowed with the United States’ highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, as well as the Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur by the French government, the National Book Award, and was the first woman inducted into the Culinary Institute of America’s Hall of Fame. 

 

Mrs. Child was married for 48 years to Paul Child (1902-1994) a diplomat, writer, photographer and artist who also illustrated Ms. Child’s classic works. Mr. Child was also an early mixologist, who created unique cocktail recipes.

What is The Julia Child Foundation for Gastronomy and the Culinary Arts?

The Julia Child Foundation for Gastronomy and the Culinary Arts was created in 1995. Its mission is to educate and encourage everyone to appreciate the joys of cooking, eating and drinking well.

 

Headquartered in Santa Barbara, California, the Foundation has granted more than $2 million to non-profits supporting research in culinary history, scholarships for professional culinary training, food writing and media as well as professional development and food literacy programs.
